Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ⅓ cup balsamic vinegar
- 2 tablespoons dry white wine (or reduced-sodium chicken broth or water)
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
- 4 medium yellow onions (about 1 ½ pounds total)
- 1 bunch fresh thyme leaves
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a baking dish, combine melted butter and olive oil. Whisk in balsamic vinegar, white wine (or broth/water), sugar, salt, and pepper until blended.
- Peel the onions, keeping root ends intact, slice them in half from stem to root, and place cut-side up in the baking dish over the glaze.
- Cover loosely with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove foil; turn onions cut-side down in the glaze and bake uncovered for another 20–25 minutes until tender and syrupy.
- Before serving, turn onions cut-side up and garnish with fresh thyme if desired.
